Compound Coastal, Fluvial, and Pluvial Flooding During Historical Hurricane Events in the Sabine–Neches Estuary, Texas

Abstract When storm surge, river discharge, and rainfall occur simultaneously or in succession, they may cause compound flooding exacerbate impacts coastal communities. In traditional modeling approaches, these driving processes are simulated separately, leading to discrepancies between observed data highlighting the need for coupled frameworks. Here, we develop a coastal–fluvial–pluvial model Sabine–Neches Estuary southeastern Texas using Delft3D simulate flood extent depth during Hurricanes Rita, Ike, Harvey. For each hurricane, four scenarios (i.e., coastal, fluvial, pluvial, compound) modeled determine relative contribution of force water levels across domain. Our results reveal that tropical cyclones such as Harvey accompanied by extended periods produce largest longest duration flooding. Such storms also highly dynamic evolving patterns over their duration, with multiple peaks can inhibit response recovery efforts. simulating storms, provide substantial improvements coastal‐, fluvial‐, pluvial‐only models, decreasing root mean square error 69%, 79%, respectively. contrast, short‐duration moderate severe surge less extensive flooding, which is typically dominated coastal–pluvial interactions. further highlight potential at locations critical infrastructure assets, suggesting adaptation approaches robust types
